Ferry Landing Stage
South Shields
This is the stage
for South Shields, one of the two landings for the Shields foot ferry. (The
other side being North Shields.)
There are historical documents
going back as far as 1377 that detail a ferry crossing between the two
settlements of North and South Shields on opposite sides of the River Tyne, near
where it meets the Sea. Today the ferry service is operated by Nexus.
